The basic training program provides a firm footing for a career in copyediting.

• The 12-week full-time program will cover the following areas:
  • List of references
  • Reference citations
  • Styling journal elements to perfection
  • Editorial markup of text
  • Handling Math manuscripts
  • Tables and figure legends

Language editing is an activity that requires tremendous and prolonged focus. And for that very reason, only select people would joyfully take it up as a career.

It therefore makes sense to have a method of identifying this specific subset of people from among the many who wish to become editors.

Four graded courses have been devised for achieving this objective:

• Course 1: Getting the basics right (8 weeks)
• Course 2: Understanding the nuances (8 weeks)
• Course 3: Establishing credibility (8 weeks)
• Course 4: Becoming an expert (6 weeks)

• Each course is to be taken separately, with a clear gap of 2–4 months for on-the-job practice between courses.
• Each course will have the following components:
  • Classroom sessions
  • Demonstration sessions
  • Mandatory participatory sessions
  • Individual editing
  • Review and one-to-one mentoring
• Group sessions will be only for 1½ hrs per day; the rest of the day will be with individuals.
• Course 1 will not only teach the basics of writing/editing but also test the editors to identify those who can be trained into serious language editing (and filter out those who cannot).
• Course 2 can be taken only by those who clear Course 1.

The following initiatives will provide the much-needed impetus for setting up editorial standards (particularly in the Indian publishing and publishing-services industry):

• Raising the bar and driving editorial quality
  • Initial and routine (quarterly/half-yearly/annual) assessment of organization's copyediting talent pool
    • In-house copyeditors
    • Freelance copyeditors around the globe (US, Canadian, UK, Australian, and NZ copyeditors)
    • Resident Indian freelance copyeditors

• Maintaining editorial quality of important journals
  • Regular review of copyedited articles, with helpful comments in the files and copyeditor-wise score cards indicating editorial efficiency
• Setting the tone for book-editing projects
  • Review of a chapter or select pages from every book project, with helpful comments in the file and a score card indicating editorial efficiency
• Ensuring that sample edits get you the prized project
  • Review and revision of sample edits before delivery to client

• Over the years, precise and uniform definitions of light, standard, and professional levels of editing have been evolved by The Art of Copyediting. (These were presented at Editing Goes Global, the first international conference for editors, held at Toronto, Canada, in June 2015.)
• The Art of Copyediting also uses an irrefutable validation system that provides a score card indicating gross and net editorial efficiencies. (These were also presented at the 2015 conference in Canada.)
• These two principles—level of editing and score card—will be used for certification of copyeditors.

• This system expects a copyeditor's formatting and markup skills to be up to the mark and does not therefore look at these as parameters for certification.
• A copyeditor will be assessed only for his or her language-editing capabilities at the level of certification attempted.
• Copyeditors not certified for a given level will, however, find helpful comments in their files as well as a summary of the areas they have to focus on.

• Assessing language editing ability for lateral hiring

• The copyedited file of the candidate will be reviewed and a score card generated
• No comments will be added to the file unless specifically requested

  • for 3 or 6 months (and look at a longer association if you feel it works for you)
